Water left in the drum usually means a clogged drain pump, a blocked hose or a failed pump motor. Small items like socks and coins are common culprits.
A worn drive belt, a bad lid switch or door lock, a failed motor coupling or a control problem can stop the drum from moving.
Leaks often come from a torn door boot on front-loaders, a loose hose, a cracked pump or a faulty water inlet valve.
Banging during the spin cycle points to worn shock absorbers, suspension rods or drum bearings, or simply an unbalanced load.
Door lock failures, a bad lid switch, a blown fuse or a control board problem can keep a washer from starting.
A musty smell comes from mold in the door seal or drain. A washer that won't fill may have a clogged inlet screen or a bad inlet valve.
Some problems have a simple fix. Try these first — if the problem is still there, it's time for a repair visit.

The most common causes are a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. On front-loaders, clean the filter first. If the drum still holds water, the pump or a control part needs to be tested.
Most front-load leaks come from a torn or dirty door boot seal, a loose hose connection or a cracked drain pump. Too much detergent can also cause suds to leak out.
Most washers last 10 to 13 years. If yours is younger and the repair costs well under half the price of a new one, repairing it is usually the better value.
