Common oven and stove problems

What's going on with your oven or stove?

These are the oven and stove issues we fix most often in Dallas–Fort Worth homes and businesses. Tell us which one sounds like yours when you request service — it helps the technician arrive prepared.

01

Oven not heating

Electric ovens usually have a failed bake or broil element. Gas ovens often have a weak igniter that can't open the gas valve.

02

Wrong temperature

A faulty temperature sensor, thermostat or control board makes food burn or stay raw.

03

Burners won't light

On gas stoves, a dirty or failed igniter, a bad spark module or clogged burner ports. On electric, a burned-out element or switch.

04

Clicking that won't stop

Moisture or grease on the igniters, or a bad spark switch, can keep a gas stove clicking.

05

Self-clean or door lock problems

A stuck door lock, a bad lock motor or a control issue can trap the door or stop the self-clean cycle.

06

Controls or display not working

Touch pads, control boards and clocks fail over time and can shut down the whole oven.

Before you call

Quick checks you can do in 5 minutes.

Some problems have a simple fix. Try these first — if the problem is still there, it's time for a repair visit.

  • Check the power or gas. Make sure the breaker is on, or that the gas valve behind the range is open.
  • Clean the burners. Remove caps and clean food and grease from the burner ports and igniters, then let them dry.
  • Check the oven settings. Make sure a delay start, timer or control lock isn't active.
  • Test with a thermometer. Use an oven thermometer to see how far off the temperature is.
  • Reset the controls. Turn off the breaker for one minute, then turn it back on.

Smell gas? Don't turn on lights or switches. Leave the house and call your gas company or 911 from outside.

Oven and stove repair FAQ

Common questions.

Why is my oven not heating up?

On an electric oven, the bake element has usually burned out. On a gas oven, the igniter is often too weak to open the gas valve, even if it glows. A technician can test both.

Why won't my gas burner light?

Food or water in the burner ports, a dirty igniter or a failed spark module are the usual causes. Clean and dry the burner first. If it still won't light, call us.

Do you repair cooktops and wall ovens?
